Modernizing the FWQ: Episode 4

Enlarging Intermediate Block

I have four blocks to share with you today.  They can all made completely with sixteen HST (Half Square Triangle) blocks, even though that might not be the way the blocks were put together in the book.

Once again I will share the rotary cut sizes to make the blocks which have been enlarged to finish at 12 inches.  For more information (and to read the awesome letters), please refer to the original FWQ book by Laurie Hird.

The first is FWQ block #11 Broken Dishes.
  • Dark pink: eight 4 inch squares*
  • Background: eight 4 inch squares*

The second is FWQ block #62 Old Windmill
  • Dark Purple: four 4 inch squares*
  • Light Purple: two 4 inch squares*
  • Light Pink: two 4 inch squares*
  • Background: eight 4 inch squares*

The third is FWQ block #74 Ribbons (altered to use HST blocks instead of diamonds)
  • Dark Green: four 4 inch squares*
  • Light Green: four 4 inch squares*
  • Background: eight 4 inch squares*

The fourth is FWQ block #102 Whirl Pool (altered to include both the light and dark blue)
  • Dark Blue: four 4 inch squares*
  • Light Blue: four 4 inch squares*
  • Background: eight 4 inch squares*
*All of the 4 inch cut squares are used to make HST blocks using this method.  (Tutorial is by Jeni of In Color Order).

  1. No doubt about it - I am drawn to the blue! I like that you used HSTs to simplify putting the blocks together.
